Watch Obol's song Gender

WATCH GENDER >

Every once in a while, while I sleep, I have a very curious dream. This dream features a song I've never heard before. And it goes without saying that I am very fond of this song, as it pulls my attention from the rest of the dream because I like it so much. And then, just as I am leaning in to see where the song will go next, I awaken. Gender was a surprise birth in this way, as it came to me while I was working on Flirt.

Lyrics:
It's so sick. He brought you falling water. It's a beastly sign. The pieces come undone. Hates his son. A mating surname fallen. The problem child. They've been waiting for. Push him away! Won't solve a thing. You're breaking your heart again! You've got to push her away! Why not push her away? You're running half off with your whole. Your life's in sync. No matter what the sullen call you. And insincere? There's no need for that no more. The beast inside, bathed in all its glory, comes lashing out. Nudge, wink, say no more. Anchors away! When you close your mind! No need to let any sun in anymore. Gotta push it away! Why not push him away? Let the mixture set in, harden. There's the door. Oh; I knew I knew you. Oh; I knew I knew you. Oh; I knew I knew you. Horses away! Won't solve a thing. You're breaking your heart again. Listen, mister. Shut up, shut up, there's the door. Oh; I knew I knew you. Oh; I knew I knew you. Oh; I knew I knew you.

Insights and Interpretations:
From Barry, 2010: This song is about wasted time, wasted energy, spent trying to turn your kids into something they're not.
