Watch Obol's song Clockwork

WATCH CLOCKWORK >

“Thank you for your vote of confidence in me.” Joey jokes, when he realizes I expect him to play the off-kilter Satriani-esque guitar solo Ashton and I wrote for the middle of Clockwork. When I wrote it, I thought the double-time drums in the bridge and solo would be a curiosity, something to grab the listener’s attention. Then Josh played them live for the first time, and we knew we had something.

Stats:
Song name: Clockwork

Lyrics:
Places everyone. Find some children. Find a myth. Love is in your eyes. Get your jollies, give it sway. Why the restraint? Let me in to where you pray. I can see change. Give me what I want today. Comb this cold, the sadder the thing, the benefits stink what you really think. Yodelay hee hoo. Dope has come to better the scene. The medication calls for Loretta King. Yodelay hee hoo. We're alone, so alone, you should try to drown your sorrows in a local pool. Now, now we're alone, and I think it's time bomb if you thinks it's time bomb for you know who. Look for a thesis and then churn out. Try to discern the grand design. Gotta believe the same things I've learned. Try not to let a brother down. You can devise a better plan now, hoping to change the way you die. Just try to swim against this current. Give it a shot and let me know. The machines are on. Pieces moving on their own. There's a goal we're moving toward. Wish my mind was more prepared. How big of you. Lead me down a different way. I curse the view. Give me what I want today. Summer calls, tomorrow sings. Intentions sink along with everything. Yodelay hee hoo. Someone calls to better the scene, the prettiest girl that you've ever seen. Yodelay hee hoo. Oh, I'm in love, and I know it's implicit that I fortify the look at you. Oh, I'm in love, if you think your body counts as a cinnamon and sugar mocha pool. Look for a thesis and then churn out. Try to discern the grand design. Gotta believe the same things I've learned. Try not to let a brother down. You can devise a counter-plan now, hoping to change the way you die. Just try to swim against this current. Give it a shot and let me know.

Insights and Interpretations:
From Barry, 2010: Similar in concept to another Obol song The Plan which also deals with the frustration of being a pawn in a bigger design, Clockwork asks, "What's the point of free will if you're just going to get punished for trying to swim against the current?" What lengths would you go to achieve something you want, even if all the signs keep pulling you in some other direction?
